oh come on, are you going to ask about every "ism" there is? Imperialism is when a nation seeks to expand it's territories, not just boarders and establish it' government and society on another nation or tiny island. England was the biggest Imperialist nation in History " the sun never sets on the British Empire" was not just a saying , but a fact. At one time England counted 123 nations, territories and islands under it's union Jack. the second biggest is Spain, then Rome,Mongolia (Genghis khan), Carthage (Alexander the great)Japan (wwII)then Germany (1870s-wwII),France, (1600s-1960s)Russia,(wwII-1990s)Italy, (wwI-wwII),, the US shows up at 31st in history for imperialistic giants. with the Philippines,Hawaii,Guam, wake, midway,Puerto Rico, American Samoa,Marshall islands and a few other dots in the pacific at our imperialistic height in the 1930s.

Imperialism developed in the early 19th century after the Industrial Revolution when the western nations began to take control of other non-industrialized nations and colonies. The "Age of Imperialism" usually refers to the Old Imperialism period starting from 1860, when major European states started colonizing the other continents. The term 'Imperialism' was initially coined in the mid to late 1500s to reflect the policies of countries such as Britain and France's expansion into Africa, and the Americas.

imperialism still exists.
The USA is the last imperialist country of the world today.
Much like England became weak after both world wars....the current wars that the USA is fighting will weaken it eventually to the point where the US will have to withdrawl its troops from around the world, shut down its military bases...give up its nukes...the USA cannot maintain its current foreign policy...it spends more money on its military than the next 50 countries combined.

You might mean what IS imperialism since we have it today. It is the establishment of economic and political hegemony ( power and Influences) of one country over another OR by territorial acquisition of it.

"Is" is the more appropriate verb since it is still active in the world today. The coercive forcible establishment of economic and political control of one country over another, including that of territorial acquisition.
