I'm talking PRE-1985... If the extent of your knowledge of punk is Blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Rancid and MAYBE some old stuff like the Ramones & the Sex Pistols, please don't bother responding.

I'm talking about bands like Wire, Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma, the Adverts, the Voidoids, et al.... the more obscure, the better!

Again.... read carefully.... MXPX is absolutely NOT "old school".

Ok... Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Suicidal Tendencies... all great bands but I guess I'm asking people to go a little deeper to the stuff that often times PRECEDED them.

Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma, those are really post punk bands - So you are looking for bands like PIL as oppposed to straight up punk and hardcore bands ? Cause the more or less straight up punk bands WERE the precursor to the post ones.
Here are some punk and hardcore bands:
AOD
X
Circle Jerks
NY dolls
Heartbreakers
Avengers
999
Tuff Darts
Bad Brains
...The person who said Televsion hit your mark, if I am right about what I think you are looking for

Probably Minor Threat's Out of Step. I'm not really a punk guy, but that record is a really wonderful record.

Depending on how much of a purist you are it would be dethroned by Steady Diet of Nothing by Fugazi, maybe Remain in Light by the Talking Heads. All depends on your definition, heck, if you credit the early Pixies records (pre Doolittle) I would say Surfer Rosa (although it's '89).

Gipetto is right too. Marquee Moon is a really great record.

The Modern Lovers - self titled is really awesome to go back a little further
