It stands for "Post Script" or basically after writing. So once you have put in the closing , ie. Sincerely Yours, John Smith, you realize you left out information in the letter at that point u would add the post script.

Post Script. That means an afterthought, something they put in "After writing".
Don't always believe it is an afterthought, btw. It often contains the REAL purpose of the letter.

It stands for "Post Scriptum" signifying that you forgot to mention something before closing( signing ) your letter and you are including the same after you have finished your letter.Obviously that part of the letter will come after(read "below ") the signature of the sender .
