What is really bothering Mr Putin is that when he refused to cooperate with the US and other countries on getting Iran to back off of their nuclear program we now face a nuclear armed country that has already stated that it will destroy Isreal and US interests whenever possible. That concerns us because with a nuclear weapon their threat is possible. With that threat now real, NATO (a military alliance between the US and other nations) has the responsibility to make sure that threat is put into check, so they want to put missle defence systems into place. The effectivness of these systems is controversial (I don't think they actually work too well) but one day the system may be improved enough to actually stop a missle before it reaches it's intended target. Russia knows that this system can be easily redirected to reduce their missle capability if ever needed. So by avoiding a confrontation with Iran, they created a problem for themselves. Not knowing what to do next, Mr Putin is barking loudly and is trying to scare Europe into backing down. He cannot go much further than that, however, without putting his country into an economic dive. It was the last arms race that derailed his country into an economic depression. Their country (or any other country) simply cannot match the largest economic engine in the history of the world, the USA, in making money to pay for military junk. He knows all too well that if he does retreat further into a Soviet-style form of government then both his own people and the people of Europe and USA will make life very hard for them, since their threat to us is very real, matched only by our own. When Bush meets with him they will talk and Bush will provide them with some type of concession that will help him relax and save face at home. Bush knows that the weapon system, at least for now, is basically worthless anyway and is only being used to steady the nerves of "The New Europe" countries just recently set free from Russian dominance.

It's a good thing for the Russians that they don't. War is messy, Russia would lose many trading partners, become more poor than it is, and probably have to face the American military. There is no upside for the Russians in attacking Europe

I don't think Russia is planning on attacking Europe. What would they gain from such a venture besides certain destruction?
