The point of no return is somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was a phrase coined by airline pilots to describe the farthest distance they could travel having sufficient fuel to turn round and return to base. Once past that point they could not return as they would have insufficient fuel and thus crash into the ocean. They would therefore need to press on whatever the consequences.
