One of the reasons why the bonobo is sometimes considered the closest living relative of humanity is because of their obsession with sex. They have been observed to have sex for just about any reason you can imagine: intimacy, dominance, apology, and sometimes just to pass the time or say 'hello'.
Dolphins are only slightly less active when the mood comes upon them. They have been observed to have sex with just about anything that can't get away from them from time to time: other dolphins, whales, turtles... whatever's handy. In some cases, the term that should probably be applied is 'rape'.
The list goes on from there... these guys probably come most easily to the fore only because humans are more prejudiced to study them. I have no doubt that there is LOTS of sex going on, and it's not just for procreation.

Actually I agree that only humans have sex for reasons other than procreation but I don't think that there's anything wrong with having sex for other reasons. There are a lot of differences between humans and animals, this is just one of them. Most animals also have sex with as many partners as possible their whole life but humans don't (or shouldn't). Humans have far more complex thought processes than animals do, humans have a much larger emotional range than animals do, humans have the ability to understand right from wrong and animals run purely on instinct. I don't agree that some animals use sex as a way to assert dominance. An alpha male wolf may hump another male wolf to assert dominance but IMO that's not sex so it's not the same.

I seen a show one time on dolphins and it showed the female dolphins rolling over and swimming upside down under water to allow the male to mount her from the top.. The female dolphins even got into this position when male divers were close by. A lot of the animal species will masterbate though.

Yeah I believe dolphins do for pleasure, they have even been known to hump human divers. I think dogs must too, seeing as some of them hump everything in sight...and well, if it was just for procreation then there would be some strange leg/dog babies running around.

I've heard about dolphins, too, but can't give any citations on it.
There was a documentary, called "Animal Sex," that showed certain primates in all sorts of sexual positions. Dian Fossey also recounted when one of the gorillas she was watching masturbated, so they obviously get some sort of pleasure out of it.

Bonobos are the animals that are most into sex for its own sake as far as I know. Even more than humans. They also do not discriminate in there sexual activities against other members of their own sex. It's a big love fest for all in their groups.
They are most closely related to chimpanzees and almost as closely related to humans. They live in Congo and are physically separated from chimps by the Congo river.
Interestingly, bonobo society is matriarchal and not patriarchal.

some monkeys have been known to have sex with each other for pleasure and not copulation, and if you've seen a dog hump your leg, it's doing it for the pleasure, unless your leg can for some reason bare puppies
some believe that procreation is a by product of sex for pleasure

well apparently kangaroo males masturbate, so that is not necessarily for procreation. however i don't think animals really undersatnd that sex is something that causes them to have babies, they probably just like doing and don't correlate sex with procreating.

According to my ecology professor humans are the only animals that have sex without the intent to reproduce. This is because organisms are very vulnerable when having sex.

i don't remember the same of them, but there are a certain type of apes or monkeys that do that when they have an argument and they are making up for it. It is supposedly a sign of forgiveness haha
