Ottowa Rules (Lauge and Hansen's -- Per Rockwood and Greene's "Fractures In Adults Vol. II" is just too complicated for the average physician -- Ottowa Rules are like Ankle exams for Dummies):
1) Were you able to continue what you were doing immdeiately after the injury?
2) Did it swell?
3) Did it bruise?
If you get two out of three "Yes's," get an x-ray.
Personally, most ankle x-rays are pretty worthless. You find all kinds of old avulsion fractures that currently mean nothing, but do tend to get the patients worked up.
Hold your foot in a perfect 90 degree angle. Wrap it with an elastic wrap (ace) in a figure of eight pattern so that it pulls up on the side that was injured. Do not wrap so tightly as to cut off circulation to your toes. Ice it and keep it elevated. Avoid putting full weight on it for a few days. Begin removing he wrap and moving your foot -- draw out the alphabet with your big toe A-Z and then Z-A
If you have bruising, in a few days, it will all form a very nice purple line below your ankle. The greater the degree of trauma, the greater the amount of bruising.
When all else fails, spend the money and go see a "REAL" doctor who can lay hands and eyes on. Some "sprains are far worse than fracture and require surgery.
Aren't ankle injuries fun?!!!

Sounds like you might have torn your ligament, but do go see your nearest podiatrist to get a x-ray just to make sure there's no break. The air cast is OK, but I prefer a low walking boot. It feels a lot more stable and comfortable, especially when you pair it up with a compressive ankle wrap. Continue to ice and elevate as always and Advil/Aleve until you see your doctor. Be sure to ask for physical therapy after about 2-3 weeks so you can get your ankle back in shape and return to running.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

if you heard a snapping or felt it "snap" you could possibly have a fracture. If you are in pain or cannot move it, you best get to the doctor! The air cast is a good idea to stabilize it, but depending on if it is broken, you may have to have it set in another cast type. It is always better to play it safe and have an x-ray to be sure. Hope you are on the mend soon!

R-rest
I-ice
C-compression (wrap tightly but not soo tight that it turns purple)
E-elevation above your heart
and take some ibuprofen to reduce swelling if there is any
when it snapped, it was a ligament tearing. it will heal in time just don't put soo much stress on it
write ABC's with that ankle so your ankle gets stronger
feel better!
