Lots of people are under the impression that cancer is all that smoking ever does to someone. Smoking not only does damage to your lungs, but it stresses your heart, circulatory system and much more. You should really do some research into what they actually put into cigarettes and you'd see there lots on things in there you would never think twice about ingesting. Funny thing is the nicotine in the tobacco isnt the most harmful component of a cigarette it is all the stuff cigarette companies add that is so harmful. I once read that there were more than 40,000 scientific studies linking smoking to adverse health effects. For the sake of discussion, let's just say that half of the studies were exaggerated or flat-out wrong. That still leaves another 20,000 studies proving cigarettes to be harmful, so I'd say the case has pretty much been made on the benefits of quitting (or not starting) tobacco use.
I'd advise you to get over your skepticism.

i think it depends on the person, i think it is really harmful to me, just being in a smoky room for a bit makes me hack up brown stuff the next day....where as my sister has been smoking for years and she seems to be okay. hopefully she will always be tho, and i have heard of some cases where people live long lives while smoking. i dont think i could since it effects me so much.

what benefit would doctors get by telling you that smoking is bad? None. I live in the city where the highest percentage of population smoke (louisville, kentucky) when I go anywhere else in the world, i breathe a lot better. Smoking is just bad for your health, no matter what it is your are smoking.

just because you dont necessarily see or feel the effects of the harm right away and because some live longer than others, doesnt mean that harm isnt being done to your body or to others. so YES it is harmful as commonly thought.

my old man is 74 y/o and has been smoking/drinking since he was 15. so it may not kill everyone. But I do know that he spends almost a $150 a month on smokes. Pretty expensive habit if you ask me and why take the risk...
