Yeah, Billie did it first, but who cares whose version you listen to and enjoy? That does not necessarily make you a philistine, just yourself.

Believe me, there are a lot of original recordings out there that are far eclipsed by re-makes.

Take Leon Russell, for instance. Have you heard him sing "This Masquerade"? It's painful!
Don't you think that historically, other singers sang Bob Dylan's songs better than he did?
Burt Bacharach is a phenominal composer but can barely carry a tune.
The list continues with Laura Nyro (great writer, awful singer), Irving Berlin (shameful singer, most prolific songwriter in history).

It's hers, and you can like somebody else if you wish. Nobody ever accused Billie of having great range, which was taken into consideration in the composition, but you need to go back and re-listen to the phrasing to appreciate her. Also try to find the earlier recordings. In her last years she was pretty well burned out from riding the horse too long.

I think Billie Holiday did it first because it was written for her. Diana Ross does a REALLY good job on it--especially with more modern sound quality/ But a LOT of people have recorded this song because it is a GREAT blues-style song.

I don't know about the original but I love Billie Hollidays version. I don't know who did the original version but I can't imagine anyone topping her version. Shes about the best singer of all time, definitely the best jazz singer.

Diana Ross or Ella Fitzgeld but NOT Billie Holiday

DIANA ROSS lyrics - "Good Morning Heartache"

(I. Higgenbotham/E. Drake/D. Fisher)

Goodmorning heartache
You all gloomy sight
Goodmorning heartache
Thought we said goodbye last night
I tossed and turned
Until it seemed you had gone
But here you are with the dawn

Wish I'd forget you
But you're here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now every day I start by
Saying to you
Goodmorning heartache, what's new?

Stop haunting me now
Can't shake you no how
Just leave me alone
I've got those monday blues
Straight through sunday blues

Goodmorning heartache
Here we go again
Goodmorning heartache
You're the one who knew me well
Might as well get used to you
Hangin' around
Goodmorning heartache
Sit down
