That is a euphamism for putting on errs for others. She presents herself to the world as one thing--having it all together, but really, she is one of the "lonely people." It was in a jar by the door, so to speak, because she needed to change her demeanor when she left the house to project the right impression on others. Basically, "her face" is the attitude and demeanor she presents to the world outside her house.

To elaborate: She didn't get gussied up because she became a lonely person. Nobody knew where she came from.

It suggests a mask (not literally) that she wears to hide her real self / loneliness from the world. She is pretending to be something she is not. That's how I always took it to be. Perhaps I'm wrong...

No makeup, and then she couldn't go out and be sociable, because without makeup she didn't exist as a sociable person. It implies we all need to be someone we aren't to be accepted.

The face they're refering to is her make up. "Who is it for?" = she doesn't have any body, or any reason to make the effort and dress up.
