You already have some good suggestions. Alice Sebold's books are both very good - The Lovely Bones (told from the POV of a 14 year old murder victim) and Lucky, her memoir from when she was raped the last day of her freshman year of college.

For fantasy, you might check out Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. All different kinds of characters, layers of worlds, lots of adventure...excellent.

Science fiction I've enjoyed most recently: Scott Westerfeld's Uglies trilogy (Uglies, Pretties, Specials). When you turn 16 you have an operation and go from being an Ugly to a Pretty. Now your job is to have fun. Only thing...they don't just make you pretty on the outside...

Books that have brought tears to my eyes are by Lurlene McDaniel. I think I've read one of hers that didn't make me grab a kleenex. They are most often about young people dealing with terminal illness. My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, might do it, too. A young girl sues for medical emancipation. She is 13 and was genetically engineered to be a match for her older sister who is dying from leukemia. There are a lot of what if questions...

The Kite Runner is another good one - Afghanistan before and during Taliban rule. The characters are strong, the storyline draws you in and for a bit I forgot I was reading fiction.

Another fantasy author I have always enjoyed is Anne McCaffrey and the Dragonriders of Pern series. This was written way before Eragon and does deal with dragons. Humans crash on the planet Pern and have to make their way on this strange planet, finding food, shelter and a way to fight "thread", which is what they use the dragons for. Later books deal with some of the craftspeople and how the different halls develop as well as some other creatures, including fire lizards and dolphins.

Enjoy, and have a great summer! I'm always looking, too!

You ought to read, "Sunny, Ward of the State." It's about a family during the Great Depression, and the hardships they had to endure at that time. Sunny is the youngest child in the family, who was six years old when all the trouble started. She and her siblings had to go to orphanages when their mother got tuberculosis. This is a true story and will leave a strong impression on you. Everybody who reads it says they loved it. The name of the author is Sonja Heinze Coryat. The book was voted one of the best books of 2005 by the School Library Journal.

If you like to cry read The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. She takes a minor Bible story and expands it into an epic story. I'm not to big on fiction myself but some other good books are:
The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Lovely Bones and Lucky by Alice Sebold
Anything written by Augusten Bourroughs, David Sedaris or Ayun Halliday.
