Unless they begin at the grass roots level and get more people into Congressional offices, they don't stand a chance. I can't understand why they don't work for third party candidates during other election years.

I am a Libertarian and I think they will get some people voted in, usually in small like minded communities or by a majority in a limited space. I say this because it has already happened. If you goto the Libertarians' website you will see many offices they have held and in many cases they close that office because its not needed or a waste of money and thats precisely what I love about Libertarians, they actually do what they say and thats reducing the burden of government.

Many people make fun of me, because they say things like I am throwing my vote away , or they can't win, and to be sure they are right about the can't win part, but I am not throwing my vote away which I will explain in a separate paragraph. You are throwing your vote away if you vote for someone who doesn't represent your views but only because they can win. What have you won I ask, nothing?

I explain this to Republicans friends I have and it shuts them up quick. The Republicans around election time sound allot like the Libertarians, and thats only a ruse to get them in office, and then they go on and do the same thing the Democrats do. Ask a Republican to explain how in 6 years of total control of the government, they didn't manage to do anything conservative except a tiny .01 percent tax cut when Bush got first elected.

In explanation of why 3rd parties don't win. What you have to understand is for whatever reason we have a 2 party system, and I think its mostly ignorance of politics but for whatever reason, this is what were stuck with. What you will find with the two parties is that they are whatever the mainstream of voters want. In other words, if you look throughout history in the U.S. you will find that both the Dems and the Repugs have flipped and flopped on many issues. The Dems used to be racist homophobes back in the 30's and the Republicans used to be liberal elitists. What has changed? Nothing, they are professional politicians and they really don't care about the issues at all, they only care about winning so they can increase their power and wealth, thats why they spend every waking moment of the last 6 years doing just that, same as the Democrats.

The Libertarians will not win in a significant way because if say 10-20 percent of the populace starting voting Libertarian because they wanted limited government and more freedom, then suddenly you would find that every Replubican was running on the same platform and the Dems would be even more conservative around election time then they are right now. They are professional liars, always have been and always will. Only a 3rd party candidate is honest, period, what else can he be if he knows he's going to lose every time?

I tell my Republican friends this , and it gets them to understand on thing, that you must vote on the issues alone, and nothing more. If you vote for a Libertarian then you are sending a message that you really do want limited government and more freedom , and it will have the net effect of pulling the mainstream parties to a more conservative position. Once they are elected if they do not pass the legislation that you wanted , then you cannot vote for the same person again. I never vote for incumbents and I tell people never do because at this point they all need to go because all of them are power hungry liberals in both parties.

I don't think enough people have stepped far enough outside of the partisan box to even know what a Libertarian is or what they stand for. I know some people who actually associate them with Liberals because of the similarities in spelling.

When it comes down to it (and I'm sure you see it too), when people are able to sit down, have an intelligent and prosperous conversation on what their political views truly are, more people would be libertarians than any other party.

Drop some links in here if you have them to some libertarian sites and what not. Maybe some people will begin to realize that the world isn't spinning on Democrats or Republicans.

Y/A's,

Remember this: the power in government is currently held by two parties - Democrats and Republicans. These two 'folks' may yell at each other, throw rhetorical punches in each other's direction, etc.. BUT, they will band together if any other party tries to remove one or the other of them. It would be a difficult, up-hill, fingernail-tearing fight to win if you're a Libertarian. Millions and millions more added to the roles may still not be enough.

Still too small I think. They also need to look at the candidates they run. Some look like my old social studies teacher.

I've been a Liberatarian since 1995, and I think the biggest problem is, no one knows we exist. We need more face time on the nation media front.

ever...possibly. Now, not a chance, maybe some congressman or woman from a little district somewhere, but not anywhere of real consequence. That's not to downplay what one of our fellow libertarians in congress could do, but it won't be out of somewhere like New York City or Chicago or anywhere with size like that. TOO many democrats who want the government to run the world. Which is very un-libertarian.

Small?
The only Libertarian I know is 6'1" tall and weighs close to 300 pounds. I would hardly describe him as "small."
Inane? Forelorn? A political Don Quixote? The little Dutch boy at the dike? Perennial loser? Sure.
But never small.
Nor wrong, either. Just too damn independant for his own good.

With the Democrats running candidates that are trying to appeal to the religious of America, after their liberal wing has removed God from schools, and the Republicans running on "smaller government" after inflating it to record levels, you'd think America would figure out that we're basically one party short of having a two-party system.

As long as we have people who think there are only TWO parties, nothing will change and a libertarian will never get to first base. I think they call it education.

Maybe the next election if they have a good candidate because we can not trust either of the other party's now.
