The nervous system is composes of TWO types of cells: the neuron which carries signals and usually gets all the attention, and the glia which provides structure, support, and food for the neurons and without which the whole system would fall apart.
If you're looking for just one word, it's probably neuron. If you're looking for an ACCURATE answer, it's neuron AND glia.

There are three simple types of nerve cells or neurones. Spelled with or without the "e".
Sensory neurones carry information towards the Central Nervous System.
Relay or Intermediate Neurones are found in ganglia or the spinal column and transfer impulses from sensory neurones to motor neurones or to other relay neurones.
Motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to effectors - muscles or glands that produce an effect in response to the original stimulus.
