I have never seen my ball python go into a ball. I mean, he makes a circle with his body in his log house, but thats about it. His cage is at the right temperature, humidity is good. He has a very big cage, various hidy holes. Hes starting to eat a small rat every week. When ever i get him out hes crawling all over the place. We got him from a breeder, but what could it be? The only time he ever hissed at me was when he had problems shedding, so i helped him out. I got to close to his head, and he hissed. I scared me! lol. but even then he did not ball up. Could he just be a snake that is very docile? Please send suggestions.

Going into the ball shape is a defensive, fear reaction of ball pythons. They stop doing it as they become accustomed to captivity and being handled. The fact that you are not seeing it is a good sign, it's not a behaviour that you want to see in a pet or should encourage. A rolled up ball python equals a stressed ball python.

There are plenty of matters to don't forget whilst feeding a snake. Most puppy shops feed their snakes pre-killed (PK) mice. If you received the snake from a breeder or a buddy, it should handiest devour reside. Once a snake is "proficient" to devour reside meals, it is totally tricky to get it to devour PK rodents once more. There also are a quantity of procedures you'll check out (on PK mice) to get your snake to devour them. This additionally will depend on your technique of feeding the snake (i.e. do you feed the snake in a separate enclosure? Is that enclosure darkish and hot?). Some hints on serving to your snake devour PK mice is to hot the mouse (through striking it in a sealed plastic bag and leaving it in sizzling or hot water) and go away it in conjunction with the snake. You would wish to place the snake and the mouse in an ancient pillow case. (Knotting the pillow case may not suffocate the snake if you happen to go away it in there for handiest a million-2hrs.) Some of the extra drastic procedures are to reduce open the highest of the mouse's head so mind subject is clear at the most sensible of the cranium. Some snakes take to blood greater than flawlessly healthful prey. There are plenty extra procedures you'll use and aid may be very effectively to be had on-line. As for whilst to feed him, I might check out as soon as each different or each few days. I did this with my moment ball python. I had issues getting her to devour, however after a brief even as adjusting to her new atmosphere, she ate excellent. I have not had a drawback along with her consuming and it is been approximately eight months, now. Having a snake adapt to a brand new atmosphere maybe stressing the snake proper now. That can be a rationale why he isn't consuming. As quickly because the snake will get tailored, he must be excellent. Hope that is helping. Good success. :)

by putting so much hype on the reactive behavior of balling up people think it's a trait that is favorable but as the others have said it's defensive so be glad yours doesn't display in that way, but you have to consider this too, you say your snake is very active when let out, that is the other defensive mechanism, remember from psych 101 ( fight or flight). don't handle your ball so much or let it free roam it's trying to get away

As Thea said...balls ball up when they are scared....

If your ball doesnt ball up then he is comfortable with you...that's all...
Both of my balls were from pet shops who never handled them so they would ball up everytime we opened the cage...
Now that they are used to us they never ball up...
They will flinch and jerk back if something scares them now, but thats all they do...
lol...our oldest female hisses at us when we wake her up...
But...It's not a bad thing, it means they feel safe...be glad he doesn't ball up for you!!!

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!!
