I put two platies in a tank and within a few days the had white stuff on them and died. What happened?

Could have been one ovf several things depending on what the white stuff looked like. If they died withon a few days I doubt it was Ich (or white spot) as this usually takes longer than that to kill a fish. I would think it was water quality problems that caused them to die. The white stuff was probably extra slime coat produced by the fish in an effort to protect it's seslf from the damaging water conditions. White spot
a nasty parasite capable of causing serious tissue damage. Up to 100% fatalities can occur without prompt treatment
