The earth is warm because of the insulating effect of the atmosphere otherwise the heat supplied to the earth would be immediately lost to space. The heat comes primarily from the sun but also from earth itself through atomic decay. This is best displayed by Yellowstone Park or by going down very deep mines.

For something to be warm it has to have heat. Heat is the transference of energy. Rubbing your hands together makes them warm right. The movement inside of the earth keeps it warm.
