I've often wondered as it seems like a dog's breakfast of a country - one half speaks French and logically belongs in France, the other half speaks a sort of Dutch and logically belongs in Holland... maybe it's just there to give the Germans a convenient invasion route? After all they've used it twice and the Frogs fell for it both times...

Because it uses up all the bits of land that no other country wanted.

More importantly, it's the metric comparitor. In the old days of imperial measurement, Australia had forest fires "the size of Wales". In our new metric age, these are now "the size of Belgium".

because otherwise you'd have no other European country that yu could comapre to France and the french would come out favourably.

Belgium is essentially France without Frances charm and manners and personal hygene

Some nice towns/cities (egs old town Brussels, Bruges, Ghent), good food, great beer, excellent chocolate, friendly people, history (Waterloo, WW1 battlefields), very good public transport system.
