I LOVE the use of "Iberians" rather than Spanish.

The Spanish who came to the new world were the gutter scum from the waterfronts of Europe. They were a real rabble who signed on to come to the New World so they could make their fortune.

The Spanish were looking for Silver and Gold... then they were looking for Indians (not "NATIVE AMERICANS") but INDIANS they could make slaves out of so they could put them in the Silver Mines of Zakatekas and Northern New Spain.

The abuses of the Indians was so terrible because it was believed that Indians were LESS THAN HUMAN... since they didn't know who GEEZUS was... that Queen Isabella actually had to issue a decree stating the RIGHTS of the Indigenous peoples in the New World.

So, to answer your 3 questions.

They treated the Indians like the slaves they had made them into.

They did it for greed and, in the case of the Priests who accompanied them... to bring them to GEEZUS and "save their souls" even though it was at bayonet point.

It was legal because it was sponsored by Spain and the Catholic Church.

Pre or post Tratado de Indias? Before they were mutilated and raped and savagely murdered. Afterwards they were instituted in Misiones, given legal rights and converted. Their land continued o be stolen and the Mision served many times as a cover for slavery. On the other hand, they were legally protected as is reflected by the large proportion of Indigenous blood in the Latin American population as opposed to North Americans (who mercilessly hunted down Indians until well into the 1970's) and who still to day deny some of them territorial rights.

Look up "Bartolome de las Casas", "Jesuit Reductions" and "Treaty of Madrid (1750)".
