In mathematics, exponential growth (or geometric growth) occurs when the growth rate of a function is always proportional to the function's current size. Such growth is said to follow an exponential law (but see also Malthusian growth model). This implies for any exponentially growing quantity, the larger the quantity gets, the faster it grows. But it also implies that the relationship between the size of the dependent variable and its rate of growth is governed by a strict law, of the simplest kind: direct proportion. It is proved in calculus that this law requires that the quantity is given by the exponential function, if we use the correct time scale. This explains the name.

confident, the exponent is the "t" being greater via the a million/5th. A(t) represents the quantity after time t. So 4 is the preliminary volume via fact A(0) = 4. a million/2 means to cut back via a million/2 (with exponent t/5). i think of you're engaged on some questions approximately radioactive decay? If confident, then the a million/2-existence is 5, via fact whilst t = 5, A(t) = A(0) / 2, i.e., turns right into a million/2 of the preliminary volume. the two t and the "5" could have a unit, le us say in 12 months. So after 2 a protracted time, the full volume left is A(20) = 4 * (a million/2) ^(20/5) = 4 * (a million/2) ^ 4 = a million/4.

I just taught this to my husband....which makes me wonder if you're him and are trying to gain one up on me.
Exponential growth is when something grows at a rate that doubles each time. Here's a popular analogy to help understand it:
Suppose you own a pond on which a water lily is growing. The lily doubles in size each day. If the plant were allowed to grow unchecked, it would completely cover the pond in 30 days, choking off all other forms of life in the water. For a long time the lily plant seems small, so you decide not to worry about it until it covers half the pond. On what day will that be?"
The answer, surprising on first encounter, is on the 29th day..when the lilly pads cover half of the pond.

Growth that follows an exponential function.

One cell turns into two cells, two cells turn into four, etc.

That would be

P = 2 ^ N

P = population, N = generations

That little ^ is the exponential operator.

For cells or microorganisms, when the cells are growing exponentially, the number of organisms in the culture increases exponentially. That is 1,2,4,8,16,23,64,128,256.....

If you graph log (cell number) as a function of time, the result is linear.
