Actually things have changed in your tank since you set it up. The fish have gotten larger most likely and the bacterial colonies have matured significantlt and most of all, if you haven't be very deligent about your weekly water changes and filter maintanence, the water quality has changed quite a bit.

Algae controll is easy to understand and not so easy to do. First, no chemicals! Yes, they will kill the algae. Then the algae rots and feeds the next wave of algae. Each time getting even worse.

The algae needs two things to grow, light and nutrients from the water. Decrease either of these and you decrease the algae. Decrease both and you really cut back the algae. I would suggest you do regular weekly water changes of 25% to help control the nutrients. If you do that already, increase the size of the changes to 35-40% for now. Also, keep the light off unless you are home and enjoying the tank and in no case leave it on more than 8-10 hours a day. The fish don;t really need it too much (assuming there is a window in the room), it's really there for us to see the fish better. These two things will bring the green water under control in a few weeks at most and will keep it under control.

Hope that helps

Dont place the tank near direct sunlight, or else you will have an algae problem, and don't use a bulb for plant growth unless your growing live plants..And no a plant wouldnt help, algae is harmless to your tank, just doesnt look to pretty..The best thing to do if you cant move your tank is to purchase a UV sterilzer online or at your local pet shop.. /they attach to a powerhead which you can also purchase there too, the uv rays kill bacteria and parasites and such..and algae of course....good luck

How long is your light on? Are you doing weekly water changes of 25% and have you changed your filter media since you had the tank? There are many possibilities why you are having an algae issue, is your tank near a window? You can do the 25% water changes weekly and vacuum your gravel at the same time, also cut down on the amount of food given and change your filter media! Good luck! don't put bleach in your tank!!!

I once had some problems with algae with my fish tank. The solution is actually really simple. At almost any pet store, you can buy tablets or drops that you just add to your tank after water changes. Actually, the brand I use is "Jungle" which has a product called "No More Algae." I bought it at Wal-Mart, so you don't have to go to a fish store. I LOVE it! And it's not that expensive - just a couple of dollars for 8 tablets. (You use several tablets for each treatment.) But spending a couple bucks sure beats having a cloudy tank or slaving away trying to keep algae off the glass! Good luck!

I'm a little confused. Is this green water, or algae on things? It's 2 very different issues. Most likely causes of either are an increase in light, and/or nitrates. Also remember that it's unsightly, but harmless. (If your nitrates are high that is bad for your fish, but the nitrates are causing the algae. Not the reverse.)

Whoa, i first wanna say you have a cool fish tank.
But this happens to me a lot, its not really the water that's dirty, its the glass, the glass has algae so when you look at it, it seems that your water is dirty. So i would take a paper towel and just wipe the algae on the glass, so that way your tank will be clean.
