US. The punishment varies from state to state, in some states, castration is possible as punishment, in California, repeat child molesters can be castrated (surgically or chemically).
Choosing punishment for a heinous crime such as this seems pretty easy, especially if you put it in a personal hypothetical situation (you or your family member was a victim). That said, given that the justice system is flawed & innocent people are convicted of crimes they did not commit with regularity, how far do you want to go with the punishment?
In the instance of rape, some cases are easier to decided, when the victim is beaten, tortured & raped, severe punishment seems appropriate. But what if it is more complicate? For example, two drunk college students have sex, the next day the victim decides that what they did the night before was forced on them, while the other person insists it was consensual? Castration & locked up for life seems inappropriate for a conviction there.
Or the statuatory crime - 15 year has sex with a 21 year old, willingly. Should they be castrated? or locked up for life?
I think the punishment should fit the crime. A violent rapist should be locked up. A "he said, she said" person that is convicted by a jury, locked up for a while.

I'm in the US, and I don't know exactly what the punishment is here, but it's too lenient. I think they should get life in prison. I wouldn't do castration, though, because then if you found out later that they were actually innocent, that could be embarrassing.
It looks like most of the castration advocates are women. I wonder how they'd feel if we started mutilating female prisoners. Especially if they were then wrongly convicted of something.

I think that if this country (USA) cared at all for the rights of women and children then all sex offenders would get life without parole. Sickos like that cannot be rehabilitated. Why would we put the bulk of our population at risk by letting these people out to re-offend.
The laws on this are still geared to protect the offenders, mostly male, and leave the victims, mostly women and children, at risk.
Then again we've come along way in the last 30 years. At least sometimes these creeps get a slap on the wrist now, where they used to face absolutely no prosecution for their crimes.
No need to castrate, most prison populations have their own ways of punishing these folk. An eye for an eye, aye?

Seems like people view this crime as being perpetrated only by men. And that the women think death is the option which should be meted out, even though death isn't what the rapist delivered upon their victim(s).
Anyone who thinks the perpetrator of a crime should receive worse than the victim isn't out for justice, but rather revenge. Therefore, they are guilty themselves, even if they never personally carry out the sentence they want visited upon that person. And for those who want genital removal, does this then apply to women guilty of rape? Do we remove their clitoris and their uterus? If so, then I am for this punishment. Removing the organ of the person that created the offense so that it can never be used again in that matter seems reasonable justice.

Because I deal with this everyday in my job....I KNOW that the laws are too lenient on sex offenders. In some cases, I believe they should have life in prison...in some cases not quite life, but at least some time in lock up. As it is now, they get probation...IF that!!! Only approximately 10% of all sex offenders are ever convicted.
Remember, sexual assault is not about sex...it's about power and control over a victim. Sex is used as a tool to inflict violence and degradation. Castrating wouldn't exactly be effective because they would then find something else to sexually assault with. Highly doubtful if it would even be a deterent because most sex offenders believe that they will never be caught. They think that other offender was just more stupid then them and they would never get caught. Unfortunately, most of the time....they're right. They don't get caught and even if they are....At least in the U.S., they aren't even charged or convicted.

I absolutely agree with you.
I'm from Canada, and we had the Paul Bernardo / Karla Homolka duo who kidnapped, brutally raped and murdered many young girls. They even made snuff films about their atrocities. These video tapes were presented during their trial, and the jury had to get psychological counseling after wards because they were so disturbing.
Homolka got off with only a few years in jail, because she made a deal. She is now roaming the streets free under a new identity. We are still very angry that she is free, because she assisted in the murder and rape of these girls including her own sister.
Bernardo is in a maximum security prison somewhere. He's inside for life.
This case remains indelible in our minds and we still harbour feelings of anger and frustration even though justice has been served. In cases like this, I feel that these people should have been eradicated from society.

The best thing for them is to go to prison and have that happen to them every day for the rest of their life. Seems like a pretty fair punishment that fits the crime well.

USA........ usually prison. Sometime way too mild of punishment. Some are out of prison in a couple of years. I agree........ casterate them! They wont rape anyone after that.
Same with child molestors. It is really scary if you look up the map of your area here in the US where it list sex offenders....... there are always red dots ALL over the map surrounding where you might live.

I would agree with the life imprisonment but I see little point in the castration. Rape is a crime of violence and hatred against women. It has little to do with sexual desire. Many rapists are not capable of sex. Castration or similar punishments are just going to get their next victim killed if they are released.
US - too lenient
