So let's say you see the future, and you see the following: You find the love of your life, get rich doing what you love, and are surrounded by people you like being around. Then, it all comes crashing down, and you lose everything, never to reach that level of happiness again. Knowing that, would you be willing to go down that road to achieve that level of happiness, or would you avoid it, because you know it will lead to misfortune?

stn1225: maybe, by trying to prepare for what's going to happen, you are going to cause your unhappiness. Have a mistress and you'll lose the love of your life. Keep offshore accounts, and one day the IRS might find you, or your wife's divorce attourney. And maybe, keeping solitary hobbies may alienate the people you care about. Weird, isn't it?

Neither.
I would live my life as if I didn't know what lies ahead.
This may lead me down the road of happiness or not.
It doesn't matter...
Because either way, before I die, I would make sure that I have reached the ultimate level of happiness atleast once, and reached all of my goals.
I will die happy either way.
And would have lived a fulfilling life.

Given all that you said was going to happen I would:
Save some money on an offshore account
Keep a Mistress on the side
Take up as many solitary hobbies as I can
That way when I lose all that good stuff, I'll have a backup life.

This is a belief about the future rather than knowledge of the future. The argument assumes that does what one wants or doing what makes one happy is a route to unhappiness. This is problem of perception and how we think.
If you knew that you were going to lose your wealth, you could make other choices before that future event unfolded. You would be able to change your future.
The larger problem is in seeing these things as being happy. If these futures are possible or probably, then changing what you want and investigating your source of happiness is more to the point.

It is Human to DENY.
I would believe that, having prior knowledge, I could attain and KEEP that level of happiness. How do I know that the future is written in stone?
Then, when it all came crashing down, I would be *stunned*--in spite of the fact that I knew what would happen all along.

Well as they say, the future is not written. Once one knows of their own future, they have already changed it at that moment.
I would still make the choices that were best for me. What I would not want to see, however, is my death and how it happens. I do not want to know that.

I would like to defy my future, for the better or worse, whatever. I just like proving things wrong, and knowing my future just kills everything about life, kills the surprises, just everything. So I'd like to do achieve everything that I wasn't supposed to do and see how it goes from there.

Well, since I only knew the end of my existence, instead of the means, I would continue striving for my personal benefit, and if it happens to lead to the same end, then sobeit.

Yes! As the old saying goes, it is always better to have loved, and or had things, and lost than to never of had nothing or loved, at all!

I would go down that road. Besides, now that I saw my future, I can correct my mistakes.
