Me and my friends are thinking of travelling around America in our gap year after we finish school. We want to rent a car to travel in but aren't sure how old you have to be, we will all be 18 but someone told us you have to be 21 to rent a car in the states. Does anybody know?

It depends on the car rental agency, and sometimes it even depends on which city you're renting the car from (the same agency might have different rules for different cities). Sometimes it's 18, and sometimes it's 21 or even 25. Often times they will charge a higher rate for young drivers (usually it's under 25 that they charge the higher rate for), so they will rent to you but you must pay a higher rate. So basically check with the specific car rental agency.

The minimum age to rent a car is 25. However, you can rent a car from some companies at 21 if you pay the additional fee of $25/day.

Good luck! Happy gap year!

You have to be 25 to rent a car without additional fees.

If you are between 21 and 24, you can still rent, but you will be paying a lot more money in additional fees.

Absolute minimum age is 21.

I don't know of any major companies that rent to 18 yr olds. The youngest age I've ever seen is 21 and it cost more. The average age is 25.

It relies on upon the auto rental office, and here and there it even relies on upon which city you're leasing the auto from (the same organization may have diverse standards for distinctive urban communities). Frequently they will charge a higher rate for youthful drivers (ordinarily its under 25 that they charge the higher rate for), so they will lease to you however you must pay a higher rate. So essentially check with the particular auto rental organization.

The average required age is 25, although some will let you do it at 21 if you put a deposit down.

21 with Hertz, preferably 25 with Enterprise and other places. If your 25 prices are cheaper.
In CA mostly 25.
Also if you have more than one driver, you need to list them in case of an accident.
