Qualitative research involves gathering inferential data about the subjects through emperical investigation, post-facto questionnaires, cognative walk-throughs, and other qualitative methods. Quantitative research involves the gathering of raw data through investigative means.

It is easier to prove statistical significance with Quantitative research, but it is not as easy to describe insight. Qualitative research is also difficult to show causality and relationships.

Quantitative means numbers, like statistics of stoping distance for different tires, hard numerical data. Qualitative means quality, it is informed opinion like if you rated different tires for how smooth the ride feels in a car, but don't actually take measurements of vibration. Both can be good, both can be the best option in different situations. The advantage of Quantitative is that it is not subject to someone's opinion or personal judgement. With qualitative research one person may think something is great but someone else might think the same thing sucks.
