when i was a kid if i was disrespectful i quickly found out that i was in the wrong and it never hurt me go for it

It is not illegal, abuse is only if the marks last over 24 hours, or done repeatedly (as in every day). When we were kids you smart mouthed your parents you got some teeth knocked loose. Kids today and many parents think they cannot touch their kids physically to punish them. That is not true. Call any abuse hot line and they will tell you what your states standards are. Most of them is you cannot physically punish your child where it will leave a mark 24 hours later.

because, no matter how much he's asking for it, it is illegal. However, if you live in Texas, it *is* legal to spank them between the knees and waist, and you can use a belt, as long as you don't use the buckle end. Found that out when my buddy's 13-yr-old stepdaughter stole a truck and ran off to stay with her boyfriend over 100 miles (and 1 state) away...the cops told him so when they brought her back.

Because you want him to have verbal control; that will not be accomplished by your losing control and smacking him.
He does need to be disciplined for every single incident of disrespect, but not by smacking his mouth.
