I am in Algebra 1 in the 8th grade. I am moving on to Geometry, for sure, freshmen year. I was talking to my friend and she offered to tutor me for the final exam. I have a D+, but I am doing extra credit and such. My percentage is 69. My teacher said that she thinks, and bets, that I will raise my grade. I need 95% or higher on the exam to get a C+/B- and when I turn in the extra credit I will have a B/B+. I came home today and told my father, since he hates when I keep secrets. He nearly had a heart attack! He started screaming and yelling, I tried to explain to him what everyone and me were doing to raise my grade, yet he still yelled at me. He said that I can't fail and that if I have anything below a B I will go to a summer school. I said that I can't because the school has to send you to one, if you fail. I won't fail. Even if I take the Exam and get above an 80%, I can't go. What should I do about my dad? Do you think I'll end up going to summer school? What should I do? HELP!

You're just gonna have to work your butt off to get the grade that you want. I am a firm believer in that you can do anything you want to do if you try hard enough. Algebra was hard for me too, but I still made an A in the class. Sometimes I had to stay after school w/my teacher for extra help. Other times I had to skip parties or football/basketball games to do my homework. But I worked hard and got the grade I wanted. You can do the same thing....

I would change my mind about summer, and propose a compromise. Can you choose which private tutoring program you can go to? Even though it feels like an insurmountable mountain, math is a foundation for future success.

Parents love it when children negotiate intelligently. Do your research, make phone calls, visit programs in person or online or both. See list below, or add your own. Ask the "brainiacs" at school. Research.

Princeton Review
Kumon
Huntington Learning Centers
A college student for tutoring
A class in your community college

Much success!

Quit panicking and think rationally. You'll fail geometry, even if you pass algebra. Go to summer school and get it over with and then next year study harder. Since math is not your best subject, study it first every night before you get tired and do the rest of your homework afterwards. Make this the last time you have to go to summer school.

If you are haveing trouble in Algebra 1, you plan to take Geometry next year; ask to go to Summer school! The better you know your Algebra, the easier Geometry will be. Your Dad will appreciate your extra effort and it will make it easier all way around. S/S isn't that long or that bad.
