No clue, but in schools these days they make it look like it's the worst thing ever. If they made it legal people really wouldn't want to do it as bad and the government could use the tax money for good things. The same thing with prostitution..
If you legalise Marijuana then people wouldn't be buying it off the streets and it would be cleaner just like hookers LOL and pimps and drug dealers would go out of business

Officially, marijuana was made illegal in the U.S. because it was considered to be a dangerous drug, and the law was run through congress as fast as the patriot act was. Marijuana, or specifically hemp, was actually made illegal because it was a threat to the cotton industry and to the oil industry. Hemo fiber is stronger, more durable, and more versatile than cotton. Synthetic motor oil can be made from hemp oil, as well as a diesel substitute (refer to the Germans using it in WWII) as well as can be used to make methyl and ethyl alcohol (again, Germans, WWII). Certain species of the hemp plant, such as marijuana, are drugs, and smoking them is actually safer than tobacco. However, using deceptive advertising techniques, marijuana was deemed bad, yet there is no true evidence to prove that it is bad. Marijuana has been proven to have true medical benefits when it comes to pain relief for cancer patients (including terminal patients), and it stimulates the appetite, which many terminal cancer patients lose.
No, I'm not a user. However, having had 2 blood relatives die of cancer, I know the effects that marijuana had on them, and how it helped ease their suffering.

At one time it was, then now we know it isn't. It is legal for medicinal usage in 9 States with 2 doctor scripts.
It is not legal now because there is no way to make money off of it for the Gov't unless they grow it, stamp it, and collect a tax off of it.
Plus besides all the legal problems it would cause. All the people in jail would have to be released if they were charged with possession, cultivating, selling etc. WAY to many problems involved.

William Randolph Hearst.
With a patented system for processing wood pulp into an inexpensive paper, Hearst had a monopoly on the supply, and leveraged it to build a media conglomerate by supplying to himself at reduced cost.
But Hearst saw hemp as his biggest potential enemy. Quicker and cheaper to grow than soft lumber, it can also be processed into paper and other product just as cheaply, bypassing his patent.
So Hearst used his media empire to begin a smear campaign against hemp, using yellow journalism at its finest. See "Reefer Madness" for an example. He also used his connections in Congress to hurry the process of illegalization along.

As you can see from the above answers it would be a mess if they did. But what ever happened to people liking to be able to make their own choices about what they do. I would at least like to have the right to make that decision for myself. I think I am intelligent enough. i think the most important thing we have to remember is it will be low grade pot you will be buying if they do I'm for the most part happy with what I get now.

Because we generate more money with government officials lobbying over the issue and police departments gearing up to invade some *dangerous* stoners farm house then the government would see if it were legalized because corporations would take all the profit. Plus I don't want to live in a nation full of Pauly Shore's. Know what I mean?

OK I read the answers and had to add to my own. The government would make less money if it were legal. And Fireball...Alcohol kills brain cells. I don't do marijuana (Tried it .allergic) But if alcohol is legal, I can't think of one reason marijuana shouldn't be.

Because we are a free country and we have freely decided that we are not free to use it. We need more prisons and prisoners to keep employment for judges, lawyers, and prison guards. Freedom is not Free. It is a dandy slogan though.
