Yes I think that's a cruel punishment. Hunger is not a good feeling and I'd never send a child to bed hungry.

Oh I don't think that's cruel. I think sending kids to bed without supper is a light puishment. I'd go to bed hungry without even doing anything bad. I think it would be worse to get beat by your parents, for doing something bad. Going to bed hungry is just part of being poor.

Yes, it's part of being a good Mother! You don't tell your kids anything you aren't willing to back up! All that does is show them you don't mean what you say! If sending a child to bed without dinner will teach them the lesson you want or is the appropiate punishment for the offence, then that's what you do! It isn't going to hurt them one little bit and they have to learn to mind!!! They won't learn that if you are only going to use empty threats on them. They have to know you will follow through with whatever you say you are going to do for them to learn to listen to you! If you don't you will end up with out of control brats that won't mind!

No it's not cruel. Kids are supposed to listen, if they don't, they get punished. And it's not that you have to send them to bed without supper, just give them a warning. I would do it, yeah. But that also depends on a situation.

I can't imagine ever doing that to my kids.

When my son was small he was a VERY PICKY eater, so for awhile I told him he did NOT have to eat anything I served, but he could not eat anything else in the course of the evening. [He could still have his supper if he wanted it, okay.] He was about 6 at the time, and was SO HAPPY with that deal. I thought he'd break down and get hungry and eat, but after about 2-3 weeks he was so skinny his pants kept falling down, so I broke down first and started making him eat again!!

There are so many things about parenting that aren't covered in those parenting books...

Missing one meal never hurt anybody. It's not like they are going to starve to death in the night or anything. I never sent my kid to bed without supper though.......mainly because a swat or two on the butt usually had a better effect.

Sometimes, in order to oblige them to do something that they SHOULD do, you gotta use that kind of threatens.
it is for their best.

BUT it is cruel when you actually send them to bed WITHOUT supper ...

I didn't need to watch old shows for that. I had it done plenty of times, and it wasn't cruel. I got punished when I did wrong.

I could never do it to my kids. I can't even shout at them.

When they are a little older and refuse to eat their dinner their isn't anything wrong with letting them go to bed without dinner. They aren't gonna die overnight.
