"We two alone will sing like birds i' the cage…/ …so we'll live,/ And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh/ At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues/ Talk of court news; and we'll talk with them too,/ Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out;/ And take upon 's the mystery of things,/ As if we were God's spies…" --King Lear, Act V, Scene 3

King Lear and his beloved daughter Cordelia are being led away to prison. By this time, he is blind and realizes his other two daughters Regan and Goneriel have lied to him and betrayed him for the sake of his fortune. Only Cordelia is loyal to him and only she was honest to him in the beginning - even though at the time her answer angered him. He is talking about life in the court and how they shall spend their days listening to gossip of the court and laughing at their extravagence - like gilded butterflies. It is Lear's hope to live a simple life and come to enjoy the company of his beautiful and loving daughter Cordelia.
Remember, a gilded butterfly cannot fly - it is just as much a prisoner as he is. He realizes that in the beginning, his question to his three daughters and his wealth meant nothing to him - there are no gilded butterflies that can replace a daughter's loyalty and love. It is a beautiful and simple quote. Pax - C

This is going to be a little out there for you if you have never heard of this. There is a theory out there anda lot of evidence by some professional people that believe that the CIA never stopped its MK Ultra program that was testing programmable alters or personalities in unwitting people. One of the programs out there was project monarch.

There is a lot of belief that Hollywood is actively engaged with the CIA to groom our onscreen elites to behave a certain way. This would be one of the reasons why a majority of stars have serious breakdowns that are blamed on "drugs". There is only so much the human brain can take before it breaks. Why would Hollywood do this? People believe that its to help keep the masses confused and complacent. There are a lot of stars that have tattoos that have sayings similar to "We will all laugh at gilded butterflies", roman numerals, butterflys, and other odd saying that would correlate to MK Ultra. There have even been starts who has talked out directly about MK Ultra or indirectly but about the control that is put over then my their "managers" or "handlers".

Take this as you want but the truth is that MK Ultra was verified by the CIA. There has been leaked programming material from documents and videos. There has also been lawsuits and some of the victims have come forward. Take a look into it and come to your own conclusion. Don't think for a second that the CIA stopped the program because they try to harden their agents to be resistant to this type of control.

Oxford Dictionary--GILDED: Overlaid wholly or in parts with a thin coating of gold. Thus the imagery created is of a butterfly that looks golden, or could literally be covered with weighty gold. Flexible interpretation could be viewing a beautiful butterfly of gold, or an over loaded golden butterfly that can not fly, and thus, like Lear and Cordelia are prisoners and can not fly.

Lear has lost his mind by the end of the play, and he is not blind, that was Gloucester who got his eye dashed out by Cornwall in Act 3 Scene 7 ( Corn. Lest it see more, prevent it. Out, vile jelly!
Where is thy lustre now? ) . Metaphorically, Lear he was blind to the greed of two of his daughters at the beginning of the play, but now he finally sees that Cordelia is the truest of his daughters, and wants her to go to prison with him to spend the rest of their days. Instead of spending their days in court, as they once did, they will only hear about court from other poor souls that have been imprisoned.

No, no, no, no! Come, let's away to prison:
We two alone will sing like birds i' the cage:
When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down,
And ask of thee forgiveness: so we'll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues
Talk of court news; and we'll talk with them too,
Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out;
And take upon's the mystery of things,
As if we were God's spies: and we'll wear out,
In a wall'd prison, packs and sects of great ones,
That ebb and flow by the moon.
