To people he is.
I don't understand the pope...why is it just him that can get close to God? No one man can be a ambassador to God, especially one the people choose.
Catholicism is way screwed up. I admire the people and their respect for God, but they have so many levels of leadership. Religion works best when it is kept simple. The Catholics have made worshiping God a web of chaos and confusion.
I think we can all worship God without conforming to a strict set of rules that just lead us further away from God.

People forget that not only is the Pope the leader of one of the largest groups of people on the planet, he is also a leader of a country, the Vatican. Politically, the pope is extremely important, and people tend to forget that he works as a monarch as well as a religious leader. Pope JPII was extremely political. Throughout history, the figure of the Pope has led wars, stopped wars, led councils and served as ambassador to many other countries. The pope also writes a LOT...these writings not only speak to a religion, but help to form and define cultures as well. To dismiss the Pope as simply "catholic" is extremely narrow minded and demeaning, for he serves many purposes in modern society, as well as throughout history. Whether we agree with him or not says little about his importance. Most people in the world don't agree with Bush, but nobody would claim that he isn't an important person. I think your question harbors little of value. Its like asking if John Calvin or Bill Clinton are important. Was Jeffrey Dahmer important? Well, the fact that he had society in an uproar and talking and thinking, actively using their minds...for good or for ill, makes him important...and so with the Pope, or any very public authority figure.

Pretty much.
He is the senior pastor to over one billion Catholics.
He was chosen as a successor of the Apostle Peter by the Holy Spirit.
But remember, just like us, the Pope would acknowledge that all he has become and all he accomplishes is God's work not his.
With love in Christ.

He is,although he's no closer to God than I am and I don't need MENpreaching God's words to me. I find God in my own world and actions.
