In effort to be part of the solution with the hurt feelings and misunderstandings I think a question like this might be useful to gather perspective. I know I have my opinions, but I am honestly curious about yours. It would make me happy to hear both old school and new school perspectives.
Please, let's play nice.
Thanks.

I really like a couple of these answers and I am incredibly hesitant to declare who has the "best opinion." It's not for me to decide. I apologize because I feel like the askers should choose an answer, but in this case because there are multiple answers that are equally as good and I don't want to let whether I agree or not decide for me.
Thanks a lot to all who answered. Once again I apologize for not choosing myself.

punk isn't supposed to be pretty......its raw, in your face, the whole piss off I could care less - and is reflected in the stripped down, pounding, fast music and political/anarchistic lyrics It was a sort of rebellion against the conformity of the mass public. It was Iggy & The Stooges, The Ramones, The Sex PIstols, The Clash, The New York Dolls, The Velvet Underground.

It was a lashing out at what was born in the late 60's with the current pop and music trends of the time. Certain 60's and 70's artists had become stagnant and complacent and kept turning out the same records over and over, and the punk thing was an answer to that. Btw- about new punk? It's not really punk, it's just evolved into pop music now, something that was NEVER supposed to happen.

Punk is an anti establishment movement. The music involved in the Punk scene is an aggressive sound with an i don't give a s**t attitude. No whining, just straight out here is what I think and if you don't like it F*** off!

for me, punk is a state of mind, and it was spilled into music. you don't have to wear certain clothes or say and do certain things, etc. to be punk. For example,Johnny Cash was as much a punk as Joe Strummer or Johnny Rotten b/c of his state of mind. I do hate how some bands say that they're punk, but they kiss the Man's a.ss, or they s.hit all over the real punks. punk can't be circulated on MTV, because it'd offend people. everyone has punk potential, some people ignore it, some people embrace it, and some people abuse the title. don't abuse punk, it can be dangerous
