A half mile? No way! Like the other person said, its like 250 meters/yards. Walking out of the Ferry Building, cross the street, then the streetcar tracks, then the little plaza, and then another street. Veer to your right slightly, and walk up Market St. You will pass a Noah's bagels on the right hand side. Right where the Cable Car stop is, there is an elevator on the sidewalk with a blue sign that says "BART Elevator". Go down. Buy a BART ticket to your destination. Then go to the gate nearest the agent's booth and put in the ticket. The extra wide gates open, and you can pull your luggage through.
If you have too much luggage, the agent will let you put the luggage through the handicapped gate, and then go through the normal gate with your ticket. Then you can take the elevator down to the platform, or hold your suitcases on the elevator, remember to stay as far to the right as possible.
If you are going to the SFO Airport, take a MIllbrae train. If you are going to the East Bay, take the Richmond/Bay Point/ Fremont/ or Pleasanton train, depending on where you are going.
Total walk time from Ferry Building to platform, including ticket purchase is about 12 minutes. For fares and schedules, hit up www.bart.gov

It's less than one block from the Ferry Building to the Embarcadero BART station. Just walk down Market Street.
You'll have to cross Justin Herman Plaza (the large square in front of the Ferry Building) first. But it's really no big deal. It certainly won't take more than 10 minutes.
And this little walk is definitely not worth bothering a cabbie over. Many of them will not accept such a short fare anyway. There's the F-Line tram... but again, it's one-stop and the driver might give you a funny look for spending $1.50 to go 250 meters.

You are only across the street from the first BART station (Embarcadero Station). Grab your luggage and cross to the crosswalk towards Downtown on Market Street. BART station should be right near a Noah's Bagels.

It's a bit of a hike to the Bart station from the Ferry Terminal. Maybe 15-20 minute walk. You might want to check the MUNI (bus) schedule online to see if there's a convenient bus line to get you there.

From BART you can either get off at Montgomery or Powell Street. Where you are meeting will determine which station is closer. The Chinatown Gate is at Bush and Grant. From Powell street walk one block east to grant and then 4 blocks north. If you are meeting at Portsmouth Square on the other end of Chinatown. Get off Bart at Montgomery walk one block west to Kearny and then walk north from market to Sacramento about 7 blocks. Or if you stay on Caltran till the King Street Station you can catch a 30 Stockton or 45 Union bus behind the Safeway store at King and 4th that will take you to the heart of Chinatown. Fare is $2 Be sure to check out the "real chinatown" along Stockton and the alleys between Stockton and Grant. Lots of temples and on Ross is a fortune cookie factory where they still fold cookies by hand.

You'd think they'd set up something easy, but no. You could walk over to Market and Steurt Street and catch a bus to Market and Drumm (the first BART station).
I would recommend just catching a cab. It'll be a short trip, not too expensive.
