I'm from the south, too, and I think that's a carry-over from European culture, where the noonday meal was typically the largest one of the day, ergo "dinner," and the evening meal was a lighter "souper" or supper, with soup and some side things to go with it.
Southern culture seems to me to have retained a lot more aspects of "Old World" culture than have other regions of the US.
We're talking trivial stuff here, folks, nothing deep like socio-political attitudes or anything like that!

I don't know. In the Midwest, they use the regular terms of breakfast, lunch, and supper. When someone says dinner, it can mean lunch or supper. Very confusing.

I refer to lunch as lunch and dinner as dinner.

They heard it on 70's shows, like Little House on the Prairie, The Brady Bunch and Eight is Enough!
I love to use this as a threat on my children when they don't behave "If you don't stop! You are going to go to bed without SUPPER!" This makes them look at me like I'm from another planet or something.
We always get a laugh!!!
