I would suggest "I Know Why the Cages Bird Sings" & "The Good Earth." That's really quite a diverse group of titles there, but judging by what you have enjoyed before, those two would come closest, in my opinion, to something you would like. Too bad it's such a short list, there are so many good books out there!

Frankenstein is a story about being ostracized - as Percy and Mary Shelley were from English society due to their blatant affair and the mysterious drowning death of Percy's first wife which allowed them to marry. The monster is the personification of their innocent love, the town's peoples reacting out of fear is the true evil in Shelley's eyes. It may have started out as a scary story contest but ended up a great book and good commentary on British society and how a discrete affair was acceptable. The other participants in the contest were Percy & Mary Shelley, Lord Byron and Mary's sister who was having an affair with Byron at the time.
Read it on a stormy night and imagine you're hear the words of Mary Shelley in that Swiss chalet at the same time the others were.
I have read all these books, of the other four I am happiest to have read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Any would be a good choice.
Have fun.

I enjoyed all these books - and I don't like all the so-called classics.
Frankenstein - weird science, a little dry - written after a bet as to who could tell the best 'ghost story'.
Andromeda Strain - good book, good movie. Chrighton wrote Jurassic Park, among others
Caged Bird - good novel
Mythology - great if you love Greek, Roman, Norse, etc. mythology - I do, so I love it.
Good Earth - great also

I think the main reason why people are comparing the two books because The 6th Harry Potter movie just moved to a different opening date and Twilight was moved to an earlier one. Both these book are popular and both movies are much anticipated movies and to have Harry Potter moved to different date made people think.

I suggest Michael Crichton. He is a fascinating writer and one you might find yourself wanting to read more of.
I also suggest Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth". It is a story of China, where she grew up, and is the kind of book that is interesting to read, expands one's knowledge of the world, and creates a good basis for knowing what good writing is, all at the same time.

Hands down the Andromeda Strain. I listened to an unabridged audio tape of that driving from Michigan to Washinton last spring, and let's just say I didn't need the caffiene.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the greatest books in all of literature. But it's summer, so read the crappy book first. Go for Crichton.
