its not just you, its an attempt to make the bat as light as possible without making the barrel smaller, its the same reason they cut that cup out of the end on some bats. These days players get unlimited supplies of bats so they don't care how many they break, it used to be that players bought their own bats, so they picked ones that wouldn't break as easy

You are right, the bat handles today are skinnier. It's done to reduce weight and increase bat speed. It's also a major cause of the increase in broken bats.

They do. That's why the bats break more often then they used to. The skinnier the handle makes the bat lighter with out the barrel getting smaller. It makes the swing faster because it is lighter.

They have evolved over the years. The thinner the handle, the more weight in the "sweet spot". That's better for hitters. It does increase the frequncy of broken bats, but with all the $$$$ generated by MLB teams, they can afford it!
