Of course you have solved your crossword by the time and our friend has already given you a decent solution (Ernani). Just to contribute, Ernani was a young Verdi's opera and a great success. For your non-technical info, the story is rather weird: a spanish guy, bandit in disguise, for the sake of his honor, having been saved by an older nobleman, kills himself during his wedding feast to pay up his debt to the old man claiming it. It's also the strange story of a girl for whom 3 guys strive (2 would be banal): the one who wins has to commit suicide as we saw, the old one collects the death toll and the third gives up because he becomes emperor Charles V. Monsieur Victor Hugo, watch the booze when writing plots .....
