I want to honor my russian heritage by picking a name that's traditionally Russian but I also want it to sound good in English (because we live in the United States) and in French (because my husband is French Canadian).

We both really like the name Nikita (which is a very traditional boy's name in Russia and other slavic countries). My only concern is that it seems to be a more popular name for girls than boys in the United States, and I don't want my son to have any problems as he's growing up.

As an alternative, we also like name Nicholas - but it's definitely more common.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks.

NIKITA IS VERY BEAUTIFUL NAME, but if you live in usa, it had female connotations, l like very much nikita, is a strong and original name, and l am a huge fan of the canadian tv show; "la femme nikita".

But reading all the answers, I like you named your baby Mikhail

Of course honey, follow your heart, it is a very important decision, and dont worry a lot about the future, he wold not hate his name, l tell this for my own experience, my name is Alba, which in english means; "sunrise", or "first light of the day", since the moment they explained me the reasons, l always loved my name, sometimes is good to be different, makes that we have much more character and personality.

God luck !!!!!

Nikita sounds like a girls name and if you remain in the united states that kid is going to be made fun of so i would suggest a different name...Nicholas is cute but it is extremely common....

Just me personally-I've never heard it for a boy, but you could always name him Nikita and call him Nick. That's cute. Who cares, if you like it, do it. A ton of boys names are becomming girl names now anyway. If you named him Nicholas, it may end up a girls name at some point anyway. =) Best wishes & God Bless!

Unfortunately it does run more feminine in the states. There's a movie called La Femme Nikita, and it's a chick.

As much as I love Nikita in Russia, I think you may want to consider Nikolas or Nikolai (always loved that name) and call him Nikita for a nickname. You know like Pavel is Pasha, Dmitry is Dima, etc.

What you have here in the States is Indian folklore and from there comes an Indian Princess Nikita and its association is now with females as a name used.Thats why Nikita is used for a female name, just a cultural differance.

You should name your son Nikita. Who cares what other people will think. Most likely he will be called Nik anyway so you should go with what you want.

Nicholas will ensure that he won't get teased, and it's still a very nice name. Not that common if you don't abbreviate it into a "nick" name. (pun intended) :)

La Femme Nikita was a show that was on for a while, and it was a woman. My friend also has a female Husky named Nikita.

I'll have to agree that in the English speaking world , Nikita is thought of as a female name. Maybe you should try Andrey or Oleg. I personally prefer Oleg, but I hate how it's pronounced in English (they say it O-leg instead of the correct o-LEG), so maybe that's not the best choice.
Some other more common names are:
Dmitriy
Aleksey
Aleksandr
Artyom
Yuriy
Vladislav
Vladimir

That is a dogs or girls name. Just remember when you name your child. THEY HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT.
Do you want your child to be picked on all through school ?
Nicholas is a much better choice for a boy

I'm sorry but that name sounds like a girls name.
Maybe it's the A ending?

My friend had a little boy and named him Nicholas but spelled Nicjolas....Nico for short. I thought it was interesting.
