This question has been asked so many times before in one form or another and too be honest you will not get a definitive answer simply because there just were too many great bands..

My answer is The Beatles

They revouloutionized music,
They are the best selling musical act of all time in the states
They have sold over one billion discs and tapes
They led the mid 60s British Invasion
They were the first band Globally transmitted on television before an estimated 400 million people worldwide..

They are The Beatles, The Greatest Band Of all time

But this is just my opinion.....

The Rolling Stones, even though I like the Beatles better.
The Rolling Stones stuck to their guns and never tried to change their sound to fit in to the currant trends. Start me up, Sympathy for the Devil, Waiting on a Friend, Ruby Tuesday, and many more could have been written in 1970 or 2007.
Say what you want about their age but do not judge unless you have seen them live. Last time I saw them a couple of years ago they gave more energy then most bands half their age.
The Stones along with bands such as Heart, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue and Lynaryd Skynaryd have managed to update their old songs live without taking away the original sound that you do not recognize it.

The Who. Revolutionized bass in rock, one of the greatest live acts of all time, exciting performers, amazing lyrics, pioneered use of synth in rock, invented the 'rock opera' and one of the first bands to do concept albums / make albums a collection of songs that belong together.

The Beatles, because nobody before them and nobody since them has equaled their musical brilliance. Without The Beatles, most of the best artists from the 70's, 80's, 90's and present never would've been.

TURBONEGRO

* why? because those Nordic mofos from Oslo kick royal a**!!! every show they play sells out in minutes because their live show is un-f**king-believable!!! the singer has had a nervous breakdown & spent time in an italian insane asylum (how rock n' roll can you get?) and their homo-erotic slant is totally hilarious.

The Beatles, because they redefined "popular music" forever.
Before them, rock music was considered kid's music, and therefore inconsequential. They brought it into the mainstream, and irreversibly altered western culture.

GUNS N ******* ROSES!!!!!!!!!!!! They are so awesome. They have so many hits in not so much time.If they didn't break up who knows how many awesome incredible songs they would have come out with. They had one of the greatest Singers/frontmen of all time in Axl Rose and one of the greatest guitarists of all time in Slash. That's a recipe for greatness which is exactly what they were.

Led Zeppelin

Because they had so many great songs on the radio, and still do, advertisers use their music, they inspired us in the early 70's and they have such a diversified arsenal of musical types.
