In San Jose, CA, there is a menu of books from which a teacher may choose. I don't remember all of them, but in 9th grade, you may well get Of Mice and Men and Romeo and Juliet. To Kill a Mockingbird and Julius Caesar were tenth grade selections. Juniors read Huck Finn, Scarlet Letter and/or The Crucible. Seniors got Othello, Hamlet or Macbeth and 1984, Brave New World, Their Eyes Were Watching God or Joy Luck Club. I liked all of them except Julius Caesar, but I think the seniors got the best of the deal.

I teach middle school. We have the Prentice Hall books for both literature and grammar. However, I don't really use them. I prefer to find things to read that the kids will enjoy. Some of the poetry in the text is okay, but the kids prefer other literature.

I love to teach novels, especially ones with a historical content to them. Probably because I also teach history.
