Oldsmobile shares common engines with Pontiac, Buick, and Chevrolet. All you need to know is front or rear drive, and if it is a 3.4 or a 3.8series 2.

Since your car is a GM product and "if and only if" you are replacing the motor and not the transmission with it then yes you can find and use a motor out of another car. I would start looking for Pontiacs, Buicks, Chevrolets and other Oldsmobile's. A great site to go to is
http://www.car-part.com
this is a nation wide salvage yard locater and when you put in your cars/make/model/year it will pull up anything anyone has that is compatible with your car. You will just need to make sure you keep your computer (PCM) so your car can run right.
If you happen to get a motor/tranny combo then you will need to know specifically what transmission you had and if it will work or not.
I went to that site and since I don't know the year of your car I put in a 2002 Alero with 3.4 and this is what they came back with:
Pontiac Grand Am
Buick Rendezvous
Chevy Venture
Pontiac Aztec
Oldsmobile Alero
Pontiac Van Montana
There prices Nation wide ranged from $150 for a core all the way up to $3502. I hope this helps.

it doesnt HAVE to be from an Alero. you could essentialy fit a small block 350 under the hood with some alterations. but it would be wise to get another motor from an Alero. try a place like American Engine Exchange or even your local pep boys if ya have one. i know they can get engines. good luck!

The Alero was built on the GM N platform. It share similar components with the Pontaic Grand Am and the Chevrolet Malibu of the same year.
