The car you are referring to is the Volt concept. The 150 MPG rating is based on using mainly electric power only (70%) and recharging every night. The battery has a 40 mile range and it takes 6.5 hours to recharge, so as of now the 150 MPG rating is a bit impractical other than a short commute. That figure also does not take electrical costs into account. If something along those lines could save GM from bancruptcy, I'm sure they would build it if the oil companies liked it or not.

Why not just buy a Volkwagen TDI which gets 50 MPG. Its technologhy that has been around as long as there have been cars.

Yes.. if they can. If you check the news TODAY GM just let the contract to develop the batteries for the Chevy Volt.
