It sounds to me as if your iron may need a cleaning. Try adding a vinegar & water solution to the steam compartment, and turn the steam function on. Once the iron is empty, refill it with water only, and steam it all out again. You may want to do this over a towel, so that you can collect all of the stuff that comes out of the steamer.

What has happened is that the water was not dumped when you were fininshed using the steam iron. Unless you buy an iron especially labelled for allowing the water to stay in, you need to dump it after each use. What to do, i don't know.

Along with what the others said... don't leave water in your iron when you are finished ironing. And only use distilled water. Hard water can ruin an iron.

You need to clean the iron. The water has caused corrosion. You can clean it with white vinegar & water...but I would recommend a new iron.

i could notably advise to all and sundry, to apply chilly water continually for laundry clothing and that i exploit Purex powder which I pay $a million.ninety 8 for a 3lb, I even have 4 toddlers, for stains i exploit spray and wash, and a nail brush if mandatory, sunrise dish cleansing soap for complicated to eliminate stains, this could require some cases yet I frequently get a stain out first via hand. warm water in many cases "instruments" a stain, yet I guess you in case you re-wash in chilly water with any coloration risk-free bleach, you would be ok additionally, spray and wash leaves a bad scent for my section, so I frequently wash that load two times. attempt washing a minimum of two times, in the previous drying. in case you could desire to apply warm water for despite reason, continually wash in chilly first. This has continually worked nicely for me stable success
