If you remember, Tabacco companies used to use this image to make their customers think smoking made you manly. In reality, it was a facade, much like the presidency of Ronald Reagan (who spent his entire presidency pretending to be John Wayne).

The republican party caters to manly men and the perfect woman. (a woman who does what she is told and waits on her man hand and foot.)
The republicans are also the party of the rich and feel that the rich should just get richer; at the expense of everyone else.

The rich and big business that is what the republicans stand for. Rugged individuals like the cowboy appeal to them as they long for a time gone by. Not going to happen.

Why are you asking this question? Are you afraid that, "Manliness is next to Godliness"?

Hillary Clinton wears pants and rides horses. Last time I checked she was a Democrat.

Oh and I found this gem for you:

Will Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) Arrive At Debate On A Horse, Helicopter, Or Corporate Jet?

Richardson Used State Helicopter To Go Horseback Riding At A Ranch. "The New Mexican's Mitote column of Sept. 21 reported the governor had taken a state helicopter to go horseback riding at The Chama Ranch of Santa Fe art and real-estate investor Gerald Peters." (Tom Sharpe, "Helicopter Flight Raises Questions," The Santa Fe New Mexican, 10/10/03)

Because the image suits the belief, much like the image of the male hairdresser suits the democrat ideal.

Think about a cowboy - self substaining individual who can resolve most situations with only what God had given him (his own strength, nature, etc., ).

I do not think that Republicans are obsessed with the image of the "rugged individual" vs. the individual who can survive on their own with out the government handouts that the democrats promise . . . .

I can't say that I know anyone who is obsessed with that image. It seems like you may be having some difficulty with it though. Go back to psychology class and analyze yourself.

I have never seen a cowboy used as an image of rugged individualism.

I don't know about obsessed, but the self-reliant and independent way-of-life appeals to people who believe that personal responsibility is superior to social engineering and dependence on the government.

Pretty elaborate generalization don't you think?

I don't consider myself a Republican so I can't necessarily speak for them, but I am a conservative. I can tell you that most conservatives appreciate strength, determination, and fortitude. A cowboy might have these qualities so that may be why you think all Republicans are cowboys.

The ingenuity of the questions asked by freethinkers on this board never ceases to amaze me... Great question and I look forward to their responses.

I will say most Republicans are about image, nothing substantial... just image. They can't resist the tough guy look even though they do everything they can to avoid fighting for their country..want examples,? Bush, Cheney....

This country was founded by the rugged individualist...not panty wearing liberal leeches looking for the government to take care of them.
