Many possibilities.
1. Faulty Thermostat, stuck closed.
2. If you have electrical cooling fans do they turn on? If not, then you can overheat. Typically does so when in stop and go traffic and doesn't overheat on freeways. usually caused by a bad fan motor or a bad fan relay.
3. Low on radiator coolant. Or coolant is old and bad.
4. Clogged radiator is not cooling efficiently.
5. Bad water pump is not circulating the coolant at a fast enough rate.

Check the head gasket. If you see any coolant leaking out of the motor, this could be a source of your trouble. They will sometimes never get to the point of mixing with the oil and just dribble out onto the block, staining it in the process. Hope its just the coolant level or thermostat like everyone else said though. much easier of a fix!!

Its most likely your fan. But i had the same problem on my camaro. Started out as a minor overheat problem. I ignored it and suddenly i started leaking a very small amount of coolant. Thought i could drive on it for one more weekend, and my freeze plug went completely. Coolant literally shot out the bottom of my car and i had a friend replace a $1 freeze plug than ended up causing over $600 damage to the engine just because i ignored it. If i were you, i would check for a coolant leak everytime before you leave your driveway. A small leak can lead to a big problem.

your thermostat is probably sticking, you could buy a new one for little to nothing, depending on the car you drive,15 or 20 $ at the very most. Installation is pretty simple, it fits in your radiator hose. Also check that you have plenty of fluid in the radiator ( coolant/water mix)

I'd check the thermostat first its a really cheap fix to replace it.
If it still overheats have a compression check done it will tell you if something major is wrong.

When that has happened to me in the past my radiator fluid was low.. Top the rad fluid in the reserve tank. When you start your engine it will sucks the fluid into the rad if it is low. It could also be your thermostat.
