In the United States I think that people go overboard in banning sexually explicit material on television. I don't really care if million's of people saw Janet Jackson's nipple during the half time show... it is just a breast. I am more disturbed by the lack of concern about violence in video games, television and movies.
The Internet, however, is a whole different thing you find very demeaning and perverse things without even trying... they pop up everywhere and unlike other forms of media (with rating guides and regulations) it is more difficult to filter out what you don't want to see (or don't want your children to see).

Contribute? As in positively reinforce? Yes, they certainly do not shame those things. And although the media may be positively reinforcing sexual perversity, promiscuity, and "ugly" sexual practises, I don't believe it creates it. (note- "ugly sexual practises" can mean a different thing to every one) Would these sexual perverts still exist without the media? I think so. I even believe that the media can create a positive outlet for some of these pervs, especially the dangerous ones. As someone who carries pepper spray when I go into the city in fear of some guy grabbing me from an alley, I say this with uncertainty. But stay with me, is it not possible that by having things like dirty magazines, websites, and movies, these potentially dangerous people are satisfied? The creep down the street got his fill on the Internet instead of kidnapping the neighbour's kid? The media is definitely a negative influence on negative sexual behaviour, but I also think it can be a good thing in preventing dangerous acts by sexual predators.

I disagree on several counts. Firstly, the above mentioned media are crucial to basic communication. TV Cinemas and Internet only reflect what people think, what people want and of course, the reality. Sexual perversity, promiscuity and ugly sexual practises are simply perspectives. Different cultures have different takes of all three issues. And one of the offshoots of globalization has been the rapid integration of these three media streams into our everyday lives, which allows several cultural aspects to be transferred from one region to another. The person who raised this question is perhaps caught in the middle of a cultural conflict.

I think it speaks more about the pervisity inherent in us all - that we would focus so much of our time and attention on the mediums you suggest. Why are we so needy of the instant gratification provided by TV and the internet? We have become a very lazy society, and we can blame these mediums all we want - but at the end of the day, no one is FORCING us to tune in.
Its time we all took a little more responsibility for our own actions and choices, and stop looking for scapegoats for bad behaviour.

i agree .. the media doesnt know what should be the limit anymore. people say that it shows reality but i guess they r not aware of the fact that internet and tvs are widely used also by children.its shocking to hear the language that they use and about the things the children below the age of 12yrs know!...ofcourse no one is forcing us to watch but curiosity in the children will , esp. when parents are working most of the time and are not able to supervise or install security systems.

It is a proved fact that repetition regardless of content ingrains habits and thought patterns. What we watch, hear or study on a consistent basis will eventually find their way out in our behaviors. "This is the central rationale behind psycho-cybernetics, which trains the individual to repeat certain affirmations regularly (for example, I love myself unconditionally). It isn't even important if the person believes what he or she is repeating, only that it is repeated. The inner mind is thus trained and will eventually respond by modifying behavior to conform to the affirmation. So it is with media or any kind." ---Richard Foster

YES I MOST CERTAINLY DO AGREE!! It is high time that we as human beings put a stop to this out of control nonsense. It is absolutley discusting behaviour to say the least. We are allowing the media be it TV or otherwise to corrupt our minds especially that of our children. Because of this, we now have an out of control society that accepts this as normal behaviour. We also have overflowing courts of law trying to deal with more and more cases of sexual assault, and various forms of crime as a direct result.Thejails are filled to maximum and costing tax payers dearly, the police forces are frustrated do to judges giving out a slap on the wrist instead of giving out a stiffer punishment for crimes. And this list goes on and on!Our laws have become twisted do to allmighty dollar! and corporations devising new ways to increase profits. The world has become a filthy place to love because of it all. What happened to clean TV programs and movies? Why have we allowed this to happene to us? Greed!

You are right and I agree 100%. Entertainment is a great sourse for building moral & making people literate, if it is is practiced in positive way, but if it is practiced in negative way it brings down the moral & make people illiterate.
To days the entertainment has become a meger sourse of business & exposing sexuality has now been commercialised, which put its' direct negative effect mostly on teenagers & also on complete society.
We must stop this otherwise we would finally land in "ADIMANAV ERA".

You are absolutely right... it is a mad race on the net and TV screen... full of filth and trash...
If they do not mend their ways then soon, they will be obsolete... they would not find a single taker...
Multiplexes with toppings of malls are right here... challenging the dominance of net and TV...
Soon, it would be like US, where people have put the electronic media on the backburner...
Beware electronic media... start the count down...

Well, what do you think cave people thought about before there was a "media"? The "media" doesn't corrupt people, people corrupt people.
I totally agree with Andrew in that everyone looks for someone/something else to blame for their faults and such. I'm not driven by "society" or follow "what's popular"...I do what works for me.
