A satellite is an object the orbits a heavenly body such as Earth. The Moon is one such. Of course, artificial satellites are man made and natural ones are put there by natural means, The Moon was created by an object the size of Mars colliding with the young Earth. As for the uses of artificial S's, surveillance and communication are two uses, Google Earth and Sky TV on the Astra satellite? I assume you have homework to do, I hope this helps. A good fact to mention is that satellites fall towards Earth at the same speed as the Earth curves away from them, that is why they stay up there.

A natural satellite is an object that orbits a planet or other body larger than itself and which is not man-made. Such objects are often called moons. Technically, the term could also refer to a planet orbiting a star, or even to a star orbiting a galactic center, but these uses are rare. Instead, the term is normally used to identify non-artificial satellites of planets, dwarf planets, or minor planets.
