Get in the pool! The fact is that the only training that will improve your swimming is swimming. There are no exercises that give the same workout to the same muscle groups with the same resistance and cardio.

Running will help with your cardio but only swimming will help you build up to 300 by next week.

Getting in the water as often as you can between now and next week will be your best bet. A 300 isn't a long swim so you really shouldn't have much of a problem accomplishing the feat in a week.

Work on your pacing and make sure your technique is as efficient as possible. If you can. have someone knowledgable evaluate your stroke and make suggestions for improvement. Even the slightest tweak in technique can make a huge difference in your efficiency and endurance!

Good luck!

General,
All the mentioned will help and yes you will improve.Remember if your doing this for a life guard position or similar all mentioned will help you and you should log 2-3 hours a day owrking to achieve this (in and out of the pool). I have the athletes I train try some wacked out ideas but all of them help me and some I took from people I have met in the union circles.
Try this if your pooled out for theday. Find somebody you know who has one of those automotive creepers, you know the red covered giant skateboards mechanics use 'em to go under cars they have 4-8 wheels. Get on your stomach legs bent up behind you and roll around only using your hands to propell you. You might have to get gloves to protect your hands but try this on a school yard b-ball court and progress to inclined walk-wys after the walk ways useres have gone home like at a business! Slowly work your trunk of your body out off the end of the creeper so that you hanging there using your abs to keep you up and all of your arms to go. Take long full strides and when you hit the pool the next day remember not to keep your stroke out wide but use the same reac. Keep doing this every evening or after swim practice I guarantee you will see great changes in the tri, lats, shoulder and abdom muscle groups.
Happy swimming! Good luck.

PS- PLEASE don't try this in the street,a parking lot, anywhere there will be could be or should be cars THEY WILL NOT SEE YOU!!!

Sorry to tell you, the only way to get better at swimming is by swimming. So, swim 300 yds. Force yourself to do it and soon you can do it no problem.
