and if not... then how could only some things have a purpose and others not? This leads me to conclude (enless God exists) that nothing has a purpose. There is no way, that in the entire universe, everything that exists serves a purpose.

What if what we call (or perceive) "God" to be is "Purpose" itself?

I do not believe that God is the only reason or basis for purpose; as how could anything exist--including God without first "having purpose"?

I am of course using the word 'purpose' in a different or more expanded version than the common use of it.

If you believe that God is the 'primary cause', then It must also be that God is the (first or primary) Purpose I speak of.

I define this use of Purpose as being a (vibratory) 'wavelength' (of a unit of the highest form of light) which runs through or is IN 'all things'--from the macro to the micro--without beginning nor end.

This may have been what the sages and holy men of the past were attempting to describe when they said that "god was in all things," or that we and all things were 'one with god' and how God is 'eternal and endless'. (?)

Irrespective of the existence of God, and the concern whether there is purpose in anything, it may be prudent to focus on your OWN purpose and what you need to think, feel, believe and do to BECOME that Purpose; and thus by fulfilling it and ensuring your continuing existence to discover yet another 'purpose' to pursue and fulfill--again and again, cycle after cycle for ever and ever. (Ahman?)

The idea of purpose. Is like asking what the meaning of life is. It is the eternal questions humans have been asking since they began to think. The better question is does purpose matter? Look at it this way...A plant is eaten by a bug, the bug is eaten by a bird, the bird by a cat, the cat is killed by a dog, the dog comes home and infects it's owner with a bacteria that was on the plant and the person dies and gets buried in the ground where another plant grows...Though each incidence seems to have a purpose, (one organism feeding off the next ) the events that occur doesn't equate to it's meaning because actions don't have to have a purpose. Things happen not always for a reason but they do happen because of cause and effect. Physics and science explain our world. Religion gives people purpose. The universe doesn't care if the planet has dinosaurs or molten lava or humans living on it. It exists like you do without the need for purpose.

Well, if everything abides to laws of physics or biology or some order and universal law, then there is a natural order. And, the order and process in which nature occurs can be considered the purpose: as in to serve as part of the process.

If you mean: Are all things significant? Yes, they all need to exist for existence to be balanced, ordered and continuous.

Most things have a purpose, unless you are talking about life in general which has the purpose you give it.
Purpose is a human concept and most of the Universe is not "human" and so need not have a purpose.

Except for vestigial structures, which represent the necessary lag and ongoing development of nature, I do believe that everything has a purpose .

But this purpose is not irreplaceable. So that when I pass away, whatever purpose(s) I may have served will be more than capably fulfilled by those who follow me.

God's existence, incidentally, seems irrelevant to this discussion. Whether He exists or not, purpose can best be understood and appreciated by symbiotic relationships within living creatures and between them and their purposeful, nonliving environment.

God need not ordain this purpose nor endorse it.

Does life have a purpose? (except to discover the purpose) I think not. Nothing we do in our lifetimes really makes a difference. Well, sure it makes those small differences and changes to the culture and inanimate knowledge of the human race, but paradoxically, despite little blobs of the invention: technology, we are no further on in discovering the secrets of the world, the universe and everything, than a one - cell amoebe.

Unless of course, those amoebe are much more intelligent than we are.

As soon as one discover the Current Purpose - then the Next Purpose emerge ... and so on ad infinitum

Things are used by animated things and at that moment there is a purpose.

Anything with a beginning and an end has a purpose.

*A* purpose is part of the issue.

I pick up a stick and use it to defend myself. You pick up a stick and use it to kill for food. We have just attached purpose to one object in 2 ways. Purpose is a creation of humans.
