Just going by my gut and American History undergrad--I think it had more to do with the rise in feminism--women had been wearing revealing clothes, why not men?
The baby boom generation led the way for massive changes in our culture and hippies were a small, but important part of it, but am not sure they inspired changes in organized sports; their past times tended to be more "recreational" in nature.

Those shorts are not by any stretch of the imagination hippie-wear. However the cultural movement of which the hippies were a part certainly had North Americans of the time more comfortable about exposure of the body than before or, alas, since.

I wouldn't blame the hippies. If you look farther back, short shorts were the standard in most athletics until recently.
