Aaron,

One's safety in Detroit is relative to location, of course. Being born and raised in Detroit, I know all too well about the crime issues. However, Downtown Detroit, Midtown (adjacent to the downtown), Belle Isle, and the Riverfront communities are considered very safe. But as within in large city, you should be cautious. (For that matter, be observant anywhere, even in tony suburbs.) And as for demographics, Downtown Detroit is one of the most diverse areas in the region with suburbanites finding it increasingly attractive by the day.

Safety tips:

Though it may be rude, don't stop for pandhandlers (and never pull out your wallet in front of a panhandler).

Observe people on the streets, but don't make unnecessary eye-contact.

Don't act like a tourist... don't pull out a camera, unless you are very familiar with the area. (Again relative to location)

Otherwise, if you decide to visit Downtown, enjoy yourself in the heart of Motown, the Motor City, the Paris of the Midwest, and the only major city due-north of Canada.

Or simply..."Welcome to the D!"

Hi aaron i know what are safe and unsafe areas. White people like you might say anywhere you might see more than 20 black or latino's in one area it's not safe. But that's not true because all of those people you might think dangerous have cars, and can ride the bus so all of detroit is unsafe my pale faced friend. Your welcome!
